Ten years ago, in their 1999 report to Manukau City Council, the Manukau Education Strategy Steering Committee noted “significant gaps between the overlapping responsibilities of the Crown, local authorities and education providers”. To address these gaps the committee recommended “a focused approach that encourages collaboration” through the establishment of a stand-alone charitable trust. COMET was born out of commitment of the mayor and councillors to better education provision in Manukau City.
COMET is supported by Manukau Institute of Technology who provide office accommodation and technology services including a telephone service and computers linked to MIT's network.
